Golf Balls Are Female

Author: Robert Knox

"MANologues" Sep 15, 2009

In this intriguing story of one man's journey through post-adolescence, the author manages to cleverly guide the reader through a series of life experiences as seen through the eyes of the proverbial MALE. This set of "vagina MANologues" about beer, babes, and football will take you back as you reminisce about much simpler times where a mans dreams and aspirations are often contemplated over beer, frequently destroyed by babes, and vicariously restored by that last second touchdown by your favorite football team. Well, ok, so you don't have to go back that far and the times are not all that simple, but Golf Balls are Female will definitely touch an emotional cord with the audience, as you laugh, cry, and reflect on your own experiences that so eloquently parallel the author's rendition of past experiences.

Story of my life Dec 19, 2007

A great deal of stories are written to teach us a lesson. Many are written to relate significant events that occurred in the life of the author, or to pass on to future generations the knowledge of those that came before. The truly great stories, however, are written to take the reader on a journey. These journeys can be tragic, or comedic, or romantic, but the best of even these are a combination of all these things that allow the reader to place themselves in the story. They allow the reader to relate to the story, to think about and react to the characters, and to consider what they would have done in the same situation.

I hope, for your sake, you can't relate to anything in Golf Balls are Female.

But I do hope that, over the course of this journey, you can begin to understand the true meaning of what Knox has written in its pages. This story is indeed one of comedy, romance and tragedy, but not of the kind that you find anywhere else. When reading this book, you're pulled along in a current of events that reveal the core of the author in an intriguingly indirect way. Unlike the great works of literature, this current isn't one of a serene, flowing river, taking you past the experiences of the author from the perspective of mere observer, but is more of a rushing torrent that occasionally plunges your head underwater and leaves you gasping for air. Time passes irretrievably, until at the very end you discover an underlying meaning that is common to us all, and with which anyone of any experience can relate: the profound and lasting impact that close friendships have on our lives.

Golf Balls are Female is not just a story about the life of one man; it is about the lives of all of us. And most importantly, it's definitely not about golf.

yes, three great pleasures...and maybe more Dec 22, 2006

It has been a while since I read this book, but much of the humor has stayed with me. I wrote about it previously (maybe for the author) and mentioned that while it is a laugh out loud tome on almost all things male, it is notably free of flatulence. Most "guy books" about drinking, whoring, and football would have some mention of the inevitable outcome of too many beers, too much bad food, and a total lack of manners.
In the end, this is a "bromance", a story about strong male bonds and friendship. I won't ruin the ending for those who plan to purchase this literary masterpiece, but suffice it to say that the book ultimately shows itself to be something of a paean to a lost friend and to days gone by.
It is, also, the book that will get Bob fired...
